Jeff Hazelton '93Walt Disney said that animation should “bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world.” After all, he said, “adults are only kids grown up.”

Jeff Hazelton’s animation and video games target grown-ups but play off of youthful curiosity and excitement that even medical school can not squelch. “We make cartoons for doctors,” he says.

The 1993 environmental science major is president of BioLucid Productions, a company he founded in 2001 to meld his interests in science and art. His staff of animators, programmers, writers, and salespeople create custom animations and video games for pharmaceutical companies.

Instead of showing physicians footage of seniors playing golf and smiling at grandchildren, BioLucid animations engage the educated viewers—sometimes by putting them in the driver’s seat of a white blood cell—to illustrate how a treatment works inside the human body. “Minimize diapedesis by navigating your leukocyte through the vessel without allowing it to adhere to the vessel wall,” reads the instructions for one game.

“Doctors were waiting in line for the opportunity to compete against each other,” he says. “They kept coming back to look at the leader board and see if anyone had beaten their score.”

Hazleton’s interest in art and graphics has not only taken his company to great heights, but it has taken him around the world. He first studied painting at Saint Anselm, then spent two years aboard a 32-foot sailboat with his roommates, painting scenes from Bora Bora to New Zealand. He studied graphic design while a deejay in New Zealand, then returned to the U.S. BioLucid began in San Diego; it is now headquartered in Sarasota, Fla., with animators around the country and contractors in eastern Europe. He met his wife, Svetlana, on one of his trips to Russia.

Although he is grown-up, Hazelton has found a way to let his youthful creativity shine in his work. His company’s animations appear on websites and at pharmaceutical trade shows, bringing to life the medicines and treatments that bring health and hope to patients around the world.
