<< BackBridget Martin '11 Named Holmes Scholar Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., president of Saint Anselm College,
announced that Bridget Martin '11, an English major from Mansfield,
Mass., has been selected as the Fr. Bernard Holmes, O.S.B., scholar for
the 2010-2011 academic year.
This award, which is granted annually, provides Martin with a full
tuition scholarship for her senior year. Through her major and campus
involvement, Martin exemplifies the values required of a Holmes award
winner. Recipients must demonstrate concern for and assistance to
others, potential for leadership, and a love of learning. They must also
participate in the life of the college.
Martin, who is also earning certificates in fine arts and Spanish,
helps teach English to immigrants and refugees in the English for New
Americans program. She writes for the college newspaper, The Crier,
and will be the news editor next year. Last semester she helped fellow
students with papers as a writing assistant in the Academic Resource
Center (ARC). As a club soccer participant she has been the community
service coordinator and will lead the club next year as vice president.
She has completed two Boston Marathons and went to Washington, D.C. on
Spring Break Alternative. This summer she will spend six weeks in
Granada, Spain, studying Islamic culture and art history.
"I am so honored to be nominated for this scholarship with peers I
admire. I'm really grateful and I hope to have Fr. Holmes as a role
model for the rest of my life," said Martin.
The Holmes Award was established through the generosity of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert C. Davison, in memory of Fr. Bernard Holmes, O.S.B., former
president of the college.
