Communication Major to start in Fall

Saint Anselm College is pleased to announce that it will add a communication major to its academic offerings in the coming academic year, starting in Fall 2010.

Housed in the English Department, the new major will provide students with a thorough grounding in written, oral and visual communication theory and traditions. The program will offer a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to examining how humans send messages and create meaning.

In keeping with Saint Anselm’s emphasis on the liberal arts, the communication major will be rooted in the humanities, while embracing the rapidly changing needs of 21st century students as they enter into the global marketplace.

“Saint Anselm’s communication program will offer a distinct view to a fundamental human process,” said Sherry Shepler, Ph.D., who helped develop the new major.

"By taking an interdisciplinary, liberal arts approach to communication in its many forms – written, oral and visual – we will be preparing students for a wide variety of pursuits,” she said. “Furthermore, the availability of internships with the news media, ad agencies, business and other organizations will allow students to marry the theoretical understanding they gain in the classroom with hands on application.”

Students will take foundational courses in communication theory, as well as literature and writing, and the option to fulfill requirements with classes in journalism, public speaking, film and other topics. In addition, students will select elective courses in their particular areas of interest, such as economics and business, psychology, politics, photography, and art.

By rounding out their educational experience with a senior year internship, graduates from the communication program will be ready to start careers in news, business, government and the many other fields where effective communication is essential. Graduates will also be well prepared to pursue advanced degrees.
